Hello!
I wanted to do a little blog post about my 'unicorn candy' nails because I feel like they're the perfect summer nail. Every time I looked down at them I was mesmerised by how sparkly and colourful they were! I'm going to talk about all the products I used to create this nail design, and I have a YouTube tutorial coming very soon!
The gel nail polishes that I used are from a brand called 'CCO'. I buy them from the Nail Ninja website. I'll link all the products I've used down below because the quality of the gels are amazing. It is UK based and they also do free delivery (within the UK) on any orders over £5!
So let's get into this nail design. I wanted to create a unicorn vibe, so after hours of scrolling through Instagram, I came across a particular video by the talented @tonysnail. He mainly uses acrylic, which is something I've never worked with, so I thought I'd just give it a go with gel polishes instead. The colours that were very popular with 'unicorn' designs were pinks, purples and teals. So I placed an order for these kinds of colours from the Nail Ninja website. Luckily there were plenty to choose from.
To start off I used a clear gel base coat on clean, prepped nails. I then used CCO Romantique (see link below), which is a semi opaque baby pink colour. Kind of like what you would use for French nails. It's a really versatile colour which worked perfectly to create a sheer base for the pops of colour on top.
For the colours, I used: CCO Moonriver, CCO Lilac Longing, and CCO Pink Gin (see links below).
MoonRiver is such a bright, gorgeous aqua teal colour. I will definitely use it on it's own at some point during the summer because it reminds me of infinity pools on holiday - an absolute dream right now!
I was a bit unsure about Lilac Longing when I first opened the bottle. It was just a bit darker than I wanted it, but it actually worked out a lot better with this particular design.
I found that lighter colours seemed to get lost on the nail once you start blending and adding glitter powders. So in the end it actually turned out exactly the way I wanted it. I think the colour on it's own is gorgeous as well. Such a deep lilac and applies very opaque and evenly to the nail.
Pink Gin is probably one of my favourite pinks in the entire world. It is literally like applying a highlighter on your nail.
I have never seen such a pigmented and rich colour that literally gives off a neon glow in the light! It is gorgeous and perfect for this nail design. At first I used a light pink shade but it wouldn't show up after the colours got blended. So for this design - go bold or go home!
With my three chosen colours, I then created three lines on each of the nails, alternating the colour ways. This is important because you don't want each nail to look exactly the same (or maybe you do? It's up to you but I preferred alternating). Then with a wedged makeup sponge I blended these colours together. I wasn't particularly neat when doing this and I did get some around the sides of my fingers, but as long as you clean it before putting your hand back under the UV lamp to cure the polish, it's fine! One tip - make sure the gel is quite smooth before curing because a bubbly/uneven nail is not a good look! This happened to my left hand because I was rushing a bit. You then repeat this process to create a double coat.
I then went over all the nails with CCO Romantique once again to make the nail fully smooth.
Then for the fun part! To make this design really pop and create the glitter effect, you need to use chrome powder. I bought mine from Amazon.co.uk and it's AMAZING! I had chrome nails done once from a nail salon in Dubai but not many places do it. So when I discovered you could just buy it and apply it yourself, I feel like I can't do my nails without it anymore! It just creates this gorgeous glistening effect that an ordinary glitter can't achieve. Like, look at that! Absolutely dreamy the way it sparkles against the blue! I could watch it all day...
Lastly, apply a top coat and cure again under the lamp. Don't forget to wipe all the nails with a cleanser and lint free wipe... and voila! You'll have gorgeous, sparkly unicorn candy nails as easy as that!

To take care of your manicure, make sure you're using a good cuticle oil. I use this one from OPI* and it leaves my cuticles feeling nice and nourished, with a delicious mango scent. Hand cream is really important too - especially at the moment with all the extra hand washing and sanitising we're doing. I use Aveeno, it's really light on the skin but the moisture locks in so you don't have to keep reapplying which is great.
I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial. I will be posting a video on YouTube with a step by step soon. But I hope this was clear enough to follow in the meantime!
Stay safe everyone!
